A funeral for 14-year-old Razmig Soukiassian and his mother Carolin Boghosian was held at St. Gregory Illuminator Armenian Church in Montreal’s Outremont borough.
Both were killed after a fire broke out in their Pointe Claire apartment in the early morning hours on Nov. 4. About 100 people were evacuated from the building unharmed, including Soukiassian’s younger brother Raffi.
The funeral was delayed Saturday because there was a long line of people looking to enter and pay their respects to the grieving families. Soukiassian’s father Gary accepted hugs and condolences from hundreds of mourners.
The death of his son Razmig shocked a large community of family, friends, classmates and neighbours. More than a thousand people flooded a memorial Facebook page last week.
Razmig Soukiassian was 14 years old. (CBC)Nov. 4 was Soukiassian’s 14th birthday.
The community in mourning included Soukiassian’s fellow boy scouts, many of whom attended Saturday’s ceremony.
Nareg Rezian, Soukiassian’s cub scout leader when he was younger, said the teenager was an inspiration to others.
“He was always happy, always willing to do whatever anyone wanted of him. He was a role model more than anything,” said Rezian.
According to Soukiassian’s brother Raffi, 11, the fire was caused by a misplaced candle which set a couch on fire. Raffi left the apartment but Soukiassian stayed to help his mother try and put out the fire.
